The Birds

Hello, and welcome to the Birds on Bikes blog!

An introduction of the members of Birds on Bikes is in order, I believe......

Lauren Everall
I am currently in my last month of my Bachelor of Fine Art Degree at Emily Carr University in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Coming from a background in material exploration through textiles, sculpture, and painting, I have now fallen in love with video. I feel a strong and clear energy from the earth and I have been using the medium of video to create works that explore ideas of connectedness, mind-fullness, and (self)-exploration in relation to our environment.
In addition to living a creative life on this planet, I also thrive on an active relationship with my surroundings. I am in love with anything that will enable me to be outdoors for nights on end, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, biking,...I am in love!
I am also fairly obsessed with the art of making...self publications, permaculture, earth homes, cob houses, art objects, songs, instruments, idea communities, and happiness. I adore slugs and moss and the Elk is my spirit animal.

Josie Mitchell
I moved to Vancouver, Canada about 3.3 years ago to study Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. Though I won't be done for a while due to some study abroad plans, one day I will walk away with a BFA in Creative Writing and a BA in Español. Born and raised in San Diego, California, going to University in Vancouver and having stayed a stint in Mexico, this bike trip will pass through many places I consider home. And with a dizzying amount of my daydreams floating to ideas of how I can identify with all my homes (natural and cultural), I can't wait to explore B.C. to B.C. on bike. Especially as I am of the belief that you don't truly know a terrain till you know how much sweat it takes you to cross it.

Hailey Gooch
I live in a cozy house in East Vancouver with Haley and Lauren where we drink really strong coffee, let the yellow mellow and have bike meetings with Josie. After graduating with a BFA is Visual Arts from Emily Carr University this coming May, I will embark on the Birds on Bikes adventure tour. I am mostly anticipating how 4 creative people will collaborate to introduce unique perspectives on living a more mindful, inspiring and environmentally conscious life.
I will practise being creatively and environmentally aware, I will remember to live slowly, and I will realize that after biking 3198km to Mexico with three fantastic friends, anything is possible.*

Haley Hunt-Brondwin
Hi. I'm the other Haley, the curly one. I represent the native Vancouverite portion of the flock. I was born and raised here in Van, and grew up by the ocean, mountains, seagulls and herons. I love to cook, bake, tap dance, garden, smile in the sun, and make art. And I also love bikes. Last summer I went on a two month bike tour with the Otesha Project and fell in love with the slow, strenous, challenging, exhilarating experience of bicycle touring. There is nothing like actively expereincing the landscape you are passing through, feeling the wind on your face, the sun on your back, and the road beneath you, aaaand getting to meet all the amazing people along the way. This May I will be graduating from Emily Carr University with a degree in General Fine Arts...generally, and I am incredibly excited to be hopping on my bike again, this time to head down the pacific coast.
I am a lover of community and believe that understanding and valuing the importance of community and ecology is the key to facing much of our environmental and social systemic problems. I am inspired by rhizomes and mushrooms and the metaphor of knowledge, connection, and holistic learning spreading like underground lateral root structures.
I feel like the red woods are calling me.
I can't wait!
